The locks provide a link for boats between the saltwater of the Puget Sound and
the fresh water of the ship canal connecting to Lake Union and Lake Washington.
Boats of all shapes and sizes come into the locks, and the
water level is adjusted to allow their safe passage to the lake or sound.
It's fascinating to watch.
And while we were there watching, there were a bunch of boats going through
the locks so that they could enjoy Seattle's 4th of July fireworks on the lake.

The ladder was built to provide safe passage for fish moving up and downstream.
It's beyond my scientific knowledge but I'm told it's a good thing.

More to come . . .
